9.04, Atheros, cannot connect in other way than gnome wifi tool.

I've recently installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my notebook (Dell Latitude c610) and i have some problems. One with sound (other thread), one with wifi (this).

I have TP-Link PCMCIA WiFI card based on Atheros AR2413 chipset. I've switched it to MadWiFi driver. Everything works, but only from gnome network manager applet. When I try to use iwconfig or other tools (like knetworkmanager from own installed kde 3.5) it doesn't connect to acces point. Where's the problem?

    [edit]
well now i know that it's needed to kill NetworkManager before using iwconfig.
