Plextor DVD drives = the best?

Personally I'm very pleased with my Plextor DVD burner which I got a few years ago. At the present it is working as good as it did when it was brand new and there has never ever been any trouble with their firmware upgrades either.

What do you think? Are the Plextor DVD drives the best choice nowadays or is this just something of the past?

I haven't been able to test their blu-ray drives yet, unfortunately. I wonder what the Linux kernel says about these..?

Not sure which is "the best" but I always seem to find the most reasonable prices with Liteon drives and are strong performers.

I have a lite-on currently, and i'm always budget minded, but I have always wanted a Plextor. It does seem to me they are the best.

Plextor is one of the oldest optical drive makers. Back when CD-ROM's had "Caddies". Don't know if they're the best. I honestly don't know if there is a difference anymore.. I used to swear by Mitsumi and Toshiba. That being said, I have two Lite-on's in my system now.

My Plextor PX-716A's CD laser died out some years back (and it had trouble reading CDs fresh out-of-the-box with files that are never read or listed, but no problems for DVD. It also had a high coaster producing rate with the Sony, Memorex, RIDATA and LEGACY CD and DVD media I used). My LITE-ON drive as of current is more reliable than that drive, and i'm much happier with LITE-ON than Plextor.

I have a 14" stack of coasters. It hasn't gotten taller since I dumped Plextor.

I had read about problems with the 716A. I have the older 708A and have never had any trouble with it at all.

I had a Plextor using the same thinking. They boast Linux support but that is a lie.

First problem and worst, they have proprietary extensions of the standard command set.. which makes our cdrecording software complain, burn coasters and generally fail in horrid ways.

Second problem, the firmware updater only works with certain models, it's closed source and the only guy with the source code is the cdrecord maintainer (who is a notorious pain in the *** to deal with).

Third problem, they claim Linux support but with that they really mean that nothing is supported and direct you to Jorg Shilling (******* mentioned above - who will refuse to support you unless you buy the proprietary version of cdrecord and preferably switch to Solaris which he seems to deem as the only worthwhile UNIX). Meaning in reality despite their claims, there is no Linux support.

I ended up replacing a perfectly good Plextor drive with a much cheaper Lite-on which worked perfectly. The Plextor was just to much trouble and for the price I wouldn't deem it worth it.
