I feel insulted for gimp developers. For gimp to be more professional, it'll need out-match photoshop in it's professional traits, not copy and duplicate photoshop's look.

Why can't gimp's splash screen just raise the bar of professional design over photoshop's? To do just, you really need to nit-pick the competition.

    I'm a professional - I use GIMP

    that's all that matters

plus, I like the fun of linux programs that make friendly icons/splash screens/etc

professionals like to have fun, too

I don't really get this. It's a splash screen, you see it for all of 30 seconds.
A mod of gimp called gimpshop exists that aims to be more like photoshop in layout (for die-hard photoshop users like myself, I suppose). I tried it, but it didn't work, and I had to do a bunch of terminal work to get gimp back the way it was. Pfft.

This at least makes people discuss ways of making linux look batter. Up until recently, huge strides were made in linux to work better - how about looking better for a change?

Linux can look gorgeous. If you don't like the way it looks, it's an easy fix. Enable compiz, install a new gtk theme, etc.

How about nice (ie realistic), big (like 128x128 and scalable smaller), icons for the toolbar in gimp...I have been working on this for a while now, with no easy solution...if anyone is aware of a way to make icons bigger, please see thread:
