    I've uploaded some free software to my site for unlocking your phone, no cable needed in the case of all Nokia phones and some Samsung.

    When you sign a contract for service from a provider they normally lock the phone so that only the sim card from that provider can be used in the phone.

    Eg Orange UK lock their phones. If you wanted to use a Vodafone UK sim card in the phone you would have to unlock it.

    That is the definition of Unlocking a mobile (cellular) phone.

    But unlocking your mobile phone is illegal, at least here in Germany, because you have sign a contract with your provider.
