    getting new flash drive ( should i get 3, 2 gigs or 1, 4 gig )?

so im going to be getting a new flash drive, to put most of my apps on - i have a netbook and want most of my stuff to be made into portable apps .
i will of course put some files on them - but mainly just want for apps, and maybe to mess around with putting an os on them?
is one of them faster that you know of from expereince, or maybe more reliable ? or works well with ubuntu ?
well thanks for your opinions !

so i was looking at these two drives for about the same price

3 is better than 1, people lose drives left and right.

remember there always less than they say, example: 1gig is actually like 900+mb.

i would prefer the 3 pack cause i split up the things i store according to what they are, 1 for pics, 1 folders & files, 1 i use outside the house that i don't put important things on, if lost & found would not compromise me.

if you only plan on using it for backups, get yourself a normal external drive. flash is best for quick saves, ease of transport, etc...

I have a sandisk micro cruzer 4gb drive. I chose the sandisk because it has a great write speed. They are not too expensive either. Most flash drives have great read speeds but they write very slowly. Oh and the PNY Attache is notoriously slow.

I also have a Sandisk cruzer contour 8gb as well.

the first are 3 drives with 2 gigs each - makes 6 gigabytes storage

the second is on 4 gb...

as Ubuntu doesn't need drivers for flashdrives (which is superior to windows) you don't need to bother if it works with Ubuntu.

But with the first variant you have to carry more sticks with you to get the same amount of drive space.

I would go for the second.

I would go with the 4gig. Less to carry around, and say if you have a 2.2 gig file which is becoming more and more common, you're not out of luck!
And hopefully It doesn't come with some ******** software pre-loaded on it...I bought one of those 8gig sandisk cruzors and it came with this weak u2 (i that that was the name of it) software...I formatted.

    Or buy from:
    newegg.com (newegg.ca)
    http://www.ncixus.com/

I bought two 4gb ocz rally2 from newegg. They are good quality and fast (was $12 CAD). 32-35mb/s read, 8-15mb/s write. currently free shipping, also for 8gb version. And I think that rally2 is an older product, but lots of good reviews, and cheap.

Maker sure to do research on speeds and quality. There are several websites that compare top end usb sticks for speed.

If using for programs, you will want to make sure the one you get has fast read/write speeds. This is a must.

USB sticks are extremely overpriced at retail stores, and they are usually crappy versions (high profit margins).

I use my oczrally2 to test/run ubuntu (liveusb instead of livecd). liveusb is much faster than livecd, and for me liveusb runs just as fast as an installed version of ubuntu. No more waiting for CD to load programs and stuff while testing.

Yeah tigers great, odds are I wouldn't have a computer at all if there wasn't a place like tigerdirect to buy cheap computer parts. Everything I own is from tiger, the only bad thing I had from them was a bad bare bones kit. The motherboard and the PSU died but it had more to do with the PSU not being able to handle my specs at the time. Everything else has worked great and sometimes they beat newegg prices.

I got a terabyte hard drive for under $100 from them. I am glad I could help

For running an OS on usb stick, when I first tried, I wrote a lot about my experiences, and "benchmarked" my recently purchased 4gb ocz rally2 against an older 4gb kingston (which is slow).

LiveUSB faster than liveCD and other liveusb questions

Having ubuntu on liveusb is a great way to quickly tell if it will run well on other peoples computers. But I'd still install using cd, as liveusb will think that usb is cd drive.
