Having trouble viewing popular websites with video & audio content

I have just installed ubuntu 9.04 on a Dell Optiplex GX150 desktop with Pentium III, 508MB, and 40GB HDD. I used the entire disk (i.e. removed Windows XP Pro) and the installation process made the swap size 1.42GB. I checked my Yahoo! e-mail and installed Adobe Flash Player 10 in the process. I have a couple of questions due to problems I am having accessing certain popular websites. In browsing less busy websites, Jaunty Jackalope also appears to be running slower than XP Pro. I am using cable internet downloading at 10Mbps.

    1) On espn.com, what do I need to install to ensure video streaming (and audio) is not choppy?

    2) On bbc.com, what do I need to install to be able to watch news clips?

    3) On picture and video files, what do I need to install to see thumbnail images when I choose "Icon View" on Nautilus?

    4) On websites with java content, how do I make firefox display the sites properly? In the past (i.e. 2 months ago), I got the prompt for installing java but I still could not see the applets on firefox after installation.

    Thanks for the help.
