The only hassle-free success I've had was with netbooks. I've found that even when the website shows them (like HP a year or two ago when I last looked) it turns out they're not available in Ireland. Anybody tried more recently?

Not sure, But I'm almost positive that if you contact Dell, you can get a bare system without an OS, and install Ubuntu or any other distrobution yourself.

I personally just bought a netbook and have 9.04 running on it.

I'm pretty sure you can get a refund from the manufacturer for the operating system. The person to get onto is Neelie Kroes (http://ec.europa.eu/commission_barro.../index_en.html), she's the competition commissioner for the EU, she'll be able to advise you better.

    Hi Jakze,

LinuxIreland.info supplies Linux Laptops and Linux Desktops in Ireland. We have some pre-configured packages or you can customise what you need / hardware / distro etc:

    http://www.linuxireland.info/Linux-Desktop.php

All too often we see low-end systems running Linux and users have to configure their own systems if they want performance. We also used to hear the 'no support' argument from businesses about Linux in Ireland - so we offered our service to make sure that even in the West of Ireland, professional support is available! Of course we ship / service all of Ireland

    Hope this helps,

    Yours kindly,

    Lloyd

Sorry to drag up an old thread; Google fetched this page for me.

I'm pretty furious about this whole thing. Last year, Dell were offering Ubuntu exclusive laptops, not just on minis; they were on 15' and 17' laptops, from what I can remember.

Now there's nothing. You know, it's just too much of a coincidence; Windows 7 is released (the one which seems to repair some of the damaged reputation after the awful Vista), and conveniently Ubuntu options are removed from Dell. Everywhere you look, it's just bloody Windows everyone, on all the deals.

buy one with windows installed as you get a better variety of laptop available, with better spec's.
either dual boot ( if you require that windows software linux wont run)
or just format and install linux
