It doesn't seem that Ubuntu does remember window positions and sizes.
I did some searching and could not find anything.
Is there a way to make it save them?

Ubuntu can save window positions, and it should be done automatically. Some programs are set to open on one certain place on the screen, but that can be changed if you are willing to go into the programs code.
If you use compiz, there is a way in the compiz settings to set the size and position of any program's window.
System76 Darter Ultra gen3, 12" Glossy LCD
Intel Pentium Core 2 Duo, 2.53ghz
4gb DDR2 SDRAM; 250gb, 7200rpm, SATA HDD
Intel X4500 Graphics Card
I just want the system to remember where I did put the windows.
Is there a way to do that?
Any word?
+1
This has been one of my few complaints for a while now. I would also like it very much if anyone knows the answer.
Theres a place to vote for this in Ubuntu Brainstorm:

Linux is not Windows.
Does anyone else here get sick of
"whine, cry, why doesn't it work like windows" type posts ?
I just tried moving / resizing : Synaptic, aMSN & Skype
Closed them and then re opened them
Result = the opened in the same place and the same size as where I closed them.
Or do you mean after a reboot they dont remember ? ( I haven't checked that)
Edit: hmmm aren't you the one that was whining about how everything is bigger in Ubuntu ?

I apologize, that was not my intention. I do have somewhat of a cultureshock, I just started using Linux a week ago.
And merely want to know if certain features exist. I googled the heck out of it and couldn't find anything, so I thought I ask.
I mean any window. I put it somewhere, close it, open it again, and not where I dragged it.
If you tell me that's just how it is, then fine. I just wanted to know.
Yes, that would be me.
But I've figured that out, thanks to you people.

As I just mentioned I opened, resized and moved 3 different apps
I then closed them
I then re opened them
and they opened where I closed them
So What I am saying is the problem you describe did not happen to me
(disclaimer, I haven't tried rebooting yet)
But I do agree it happens with some things
eg. doing updates I always have to resize the window to see the updates downloading.
But as I wouldnt normally do updates more than once per day, it is not really an issue.
But seriously, Linux is not Windows, you will find there are many differences you will need to "adapt to"
Linux is easy to learn, but unlearning Windows is hard.
I've been using Ubuntu now for approx 18 months
I went from just tinkering in Ubuntu use in the first couple of months to
6 months later - now where I rarely boot into Windows,
It's only still on my PC as my kids still like some games and all the crap that comes with Windows Live Messenger.
