Re: Howto: Fix Windows share browsing issues

The problem I'm having is that I can see one of my network Vista shares but I cannot write to it ("Create Folder/Create Document" are greyed out in File Browser). Also, drilling deeper than one folder displays no files. Strangely, I have another Vista share on the same computer that allows writing just fine. Both mount at boot-up and both have the same entry in fstab (except for the mount share name, of course!). I've tried changing permissions as root, but they don't seem to help.

I also cannot seem to get winbind to install on Jaunty. Rather, it seems to install, then hangs on "Starting winbind daemon" in Terminal. On reboot, the system hangs after loading the samba daemons. If I remove winbind, it boots normally.

    Any help gratefully accepted!

Re: Howto: Fix Windows share browsing issues

Regarding the Vista share which you are unable to access, did you review the Vista specific information in the first post regarding UAC drives and directories? Is the folder you're trying to share owned by your Vista user or is it UAC protected?

I'm not too sure what could be causing winbind to fail. Are you on a static IP or DHCP? If you're using DHCP, See if you can find anything in the logs:
    Code:
    cat /var/log/daemon.log | grep winbind
    cat /var/log/dmesg | grep winbind
    cat /var/log/messages | grep winbind
    cat /var/log/syslog | grep winbind
Also, please post the contents of the following config files:
    /etc/nsswitch.conf
    /etc/samba/smb.conf

Re: Howto: Fix Windows share browsing issues

    Hi,
I tried all the above, but with no success.
When I go to places->Network I see only Windows Network, while there are also other linux shared folders on the network.
When I click on Windows Network, same error appears: "Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share list from server".
Also tried smb://192.168.0.x/shared_folder, but no luck again with error "Cannot display smb://192.168.0.x/shared_folder".
    Any help would be appreciated.

ubuntu 8.04 (dell) to ubuntu 9.04 network

Hello, and thanks for the helpful tutorial.

I have a new dell mini 12 with Ubuntu 8.04 and a dual boot dual opteron running 32bit Ubuntu 9.04 and Window$. I have spent the past 36 hours attempting network them. THey are connected through a Linksys router. I confess to being an idiot, but I have set up home networks before with Samba, Window$, and various flavors of Ubuntu. This time I am out of ideas.

Dell does not see workgroup when Opteron running Ubuntu. When I click " network servers" in left pane of Nautilus, it shows Windows Network in right pane. When I click Windows Network it thinks for a second and shows empty pane. It does (when properly configured) see workgroup when opteron running window$. Furthermore dell can access windows shares. (properly configured means uncommenting out "; name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast".) The windows machine cannot access the dell. When samba was installed on dell, as opposed to just smbfs, the window$ machine could see dell in network but not access its available shared folders. When just smbfs windows only sees itself in workgroup.

When opteron is running Ubuntu 9.04 and I click "Network" in Nautilus it shows "Windows network, 0 bytes" in right hand pane, and when "Windows Network" is clicked it says "Unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server"

I tried solutions to problems 1, all combinations of problem 2, and problem 4. When I opened nsswich.conf the file was blank.

First I installed Samba on both machines, then smbfs on both, then uninstalled Samba on both, then reinstalled Samba on Opteron, since that is the 'dominant' machine.

I have firestarter installed and properly configured on dell (and similarly configured on opteron) - it can access windows with firewall active, but in an effort to limit my difficulties I have been mostly working with firestarter turned off.

Question: as a matter of pride I would like to resolve this with samba, but am tempted to try nss, but why can dell see windows and not windows see dell? Why does dell see windows and not Ubuntu 9.04? Why is
nsswitch.conf blank? And finally, ideas how to get these two devils to see and talk to one another.

    Thanks in advance, sincerely.

Also, please post the contents of the following config files:
    /etc/nsswitch.conf
    /etc/samba/smb.conf
UAC on Vista is disabled and has been for some time. I was able to write to the partition under Intrepid. I use DHCP, but I have the router set to assign a static IP based on MAC address. There are no messages relating to winbind that show up when the cat commands are entered.

    Here are the nsswitch.conf files:

    Code:
    # /etc/nsswitch.conf
    #
    # Example configuration of GNU Name Service Switch functionality.
    # If you have the `glibc-doc-reference' and `info' packages installed, try:
    # `info libc "Name Service Switch"' for information about this file.

    ethers: db files
    rpc: db files

    netgroup: nis
    And for smb.conf:

    Code:
    #
    # Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux.
    #
    #
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options most of which
    # are not shown in this example
    #
    # Some options that are often worth tuning have been included as
    # commented-out examples in this file.
    # - When such options are commented with ";", the proposed setting
    # differs from the default Samba behaviour
    # - When commented with "#", the proposed setting is the default
    # behaviour of Samba but the option is considered important
    # enough to be mentioned here
    #
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command
    # "testparm" to check that you have not made any basic syntactic
    # errors.
    # A well-established practice is to name the original file
    # "smb.conf.master" and create the "real" config file with
    # testparm -s smb.conf.master >smb.conf
    # This minimizes the size of the really used smb.conf file
    # which, according to the Samba Team, impacts performance
    # However, use this with caution if your smb.conf file contains nested
    # "include" statements. See Debian bug #483187 for a case
    # where using a master file is not a good idea.

The answer to all your problems lies in the answer to the above problem.

You probably entered the command incorrectly. This file is never blank.

Okay, I found the right log. Please try restarting winbind:
    Code:
    sudo /etc/init.d/winbind restart
    Then post the contents of:
    Code:
    /var/log/samba/log.winbindd

    ubuntu to ubuntu share problems

    Hello All,

Thank you for the help Dmizer.

I edited smb.conf and nsswitch.conf to match jhamric's, restarted samba and winbind, but with similar problems. dell's nautilus locations says "smb:///" and opteron shows workgroup (an improvement) but when workgroup clicked, "unable to mount location - failed to retrieve share list from server". Here is the log.windbindd

    Code:
    [2009/06/05 17:29:13, 0] winbindd/winbindd.c:main(1125)
      winbindd version 3.3.2 started.

ubuntu 8.04 to ubuntu 9.04 network

After previous post I restarted both machines, and both failed to boot properly. I had this same problem earlier tinkering with smb.conf and nsswithc.conf.

Opteron (9.04) fails to boot to login screen, and it goes to detail screen where it shows firestarter FAIL's to start, and it hangs starting samba daemons.

Dell (8.04) boots through login screen but between login and desktop error appears: "Internal Error, failed to initialize HAL". I edited smb.conf to fix HAL issue but same error on reboot. I changed nsswitch.conf back to (below) and machine booted normally:

    Code:
    hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4
Getting back into Opteron more tricky. I used live cd to get into machine and edited nsswitch.conf and rebooted as normal.
