Update problems

When I try to look for Jaunty updates, I always get the following error message;

Could not initialise the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initialising the package information.

Please report this bug for the 'update-manager' package and try to include the following error message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eproblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_jaunty-updates_restricted_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

whats the output of:

sudo apt-get --fix-missing

I did this exactly and then restarted my system but the problem is still there. I can't update due to the error message (given above).

I think this will do the trick, but i'am not sure:

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf

sudo apt-get update
