8.10 to 9.04 and lost the sound...

    Hi!

Once I upgraded ubuntu from 8.10 to 9.04, the sound stopped to work.
I tried everything I found in the forum, but no one seems work properly.

In the volume control, while an application does not play any audio, I see an entry in the Playback tab (the audio is not mute )

Any suggestion is welcome! Thanks! M.S.

    My distribution version and architecture:

Red face Re: 8.10 to 9.04 and lost the sound...

    Hello all,

I hope this is the right thread to air my problem of missing sound.

I have no sound when booting Kubuntu or Xubuntu versions 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-11. My machine is a Dell Inspiron desktop with factory installed Ubuntu 8.04.2, kernel 2.6.22-14. I am presently using Xubuntu, because KDE4 is just too much for me right now.

When booting into Ubuntu 8.04.2, there is sound. With my old Kubuntu 8.10, the sound also worked. When I was asked if I wanted to upgrade (after installing updates), I said "yes," and from that day on I have had no sound.

I am in the process of combing through /var/log/messages for a clue.

    aplay tells me,

    dave@surprise:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC888 Digital [ALC888 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

When I was booted into Ubuntu 8.04.2 (with sound), I only got the first stanza of the above. I have read other posts on the various forums suggesting that recognizing the [ALC888 Digital] device can cause sound loss. How can I confirm this?

I have been fighting this problem for two weeks, now, and am about out of ideas, so any help or nudges in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.

If the link that I have provided doesn't help I'm stumped. Have you tried adding your query onto said link. The people on there seem to know their stuff. Would like to see how you get on.

Hi Dave, it would be better for you start your own thread with your own particular problem - you're worth it and people would be able to focus on it better. I'm surprised that Canonical dropped the ball with your Dell machine that came with Ubuntu factory installed. That looks really bad that an upgrade would break your sound like that. They need to make sure that anyone who buys an Ubuntu machine from Dell with not be having any problems.

Anyway, I have only one suggestion - maybe you've tried it. You could add this to the end of your alsa-base.conf file:

    Code:
    sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
add this line at the end of the file
    Code:

    options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dell
    Save and reboot.

Assuming you have an Inspiron 530?

This is the community documentation for sound troubleshooting

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

also, another guide which started since 2006

    Hope these can help.

I had this problem as well, but I was using an ATI card, nevertheless this may work.

Go to your terminal and type
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install alsamixergui
