    Re: Acer Timeline 3810T

Wow another firmware update for the 4810 folks? I was starting to feel left out with my 3810 until I saw this on the acer website today:

    VOLUNTARY SAFETY RECALL
    Dear valued Acer Customer,
It has come to our attention that certain Acer Aspire Notebooks may overheat under specific conditions. Acer is therefore voluntarily instituting a safety recall for these products.

The affected units are Acer Aspire models AS3410, AS3810T, AS3810TG, AS3810TZ and AS3810TZG manufactured prior to September 15, 2009. In the affected units the microphone cable may overheat when extreme pressure is applied repeatedly to the left palm rest. As a result, the unitҳ case may become deformed and the system may malfunction.

Acer has voluntarily instituted a safety recall program to proactively replace the microphone cable in the affected units to eliminate any risk of overheating.

Don't blame me, it's an IE problem.

Thumbs down Re: Acer Timeline 3810T

I have GREAT news for the 4810T owners the 2.30 BIOS[1] is rockin we now have backlight control keys working

There is a catch tho you have to change from
    Code:
xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native
    to
    Code:
xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL kernel
or you will get a freeze type effect on the desktop. Also I noticed that my wifi went funny to and I could not ping anything even tho NM was say I was connected to AP.

So DON'T play with backlight key till done the above changes.

Edit: I have noticed this works correctly in 'combination' too
    Code:
xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL combination

What version of Ubuntu? I tried the xrandr change in 9.10 and it failed with incorrect parameter (or something like that) xrandr --prop shows no BACKLIGHT_CONTROL options.

I don't use Ubuntu, I run Debian. So in theory there should not be a lot of difference.

Me as well - my hard drive seems to be a lemon too though (constant write errors, commits timestamps in the future, occasionally won't even show up in bios). Has been complicated to figure out how to get a replacement since my warranty only covers service in the states (where the laptop was purchased) and I've since moved to France. I'm hoping the recall will allow me to service both in one shot...
