9.04 / USB dLink (DWA-130) / Secure Networks not working, Unsecure Work

I have spent days looking for answers using google, these forums and various tutorials. I have tried 3 different USB WiFi adaptors. I am at my wits end. Please help if you can.

I was first trying to get a Belkin F5D7051, then a Linksys WUSB54GC version3. I had no luck even getting a connection with them, so I went and got a D-Link DWA-130 802.11N USB adaptor. Based on http://help.ubuntu.com/community/WiF...CardsSupported it should work. I downloaded the Windows XP driver for the DWA-130 (version: C). Then tried using the ndiswrapper GUI (ndisgtk) to install these drivers. I was able to connect to an unsecure network, but I am not able to connect to either WEP or WPA Networks.

SO I started over installing the the same drivers using the command line with the help from this document: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...er/Ndiswrapper . Same Results.

I've also tried using both NetworkManager and WICD. Still unable to connect to a secure network.

Please Help; here is some Info:

    I am using: Mythbuntu 9.04, and a D-Link DWA-130 USB WiFi Adaptor.

Re: 9.04 / USB dLink (DWA-130) / Secure Networks not working, Unsecure Work

Are you sure you have the rev c version? If so I believe the linux drivers are available on the D-Link website here http://www.dlink.com/products/suppor...6&pv=133&sec=0 Mine was a rev a and I had to use ndisgtk and do away with wep encoding. I did get it to work reliably in both 8.10 and 9.04 though, in wpa2 psk mode.

Re: 9.04 / USB dLink (DWA-130) / Secure Networks not working, Unsecure Work

Indeed I have Revision C of the DWA-130 and yes I have tried the Linux Drivers provided on the DLink website. Without success I could not even install them.

Here is what I got when I tried folling the instruction (Method 1) from the included readme.txt file.

    Code:
    :-$ make
    [worked without issue]

    Code:
    :-$ sudo make install

    make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/rtl8192u_linux_2.6.0006.1031.2008/ieee80211'
    make -C /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/build M= CC=gcc modules
    make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28-11-generic'
      CHK include/linux/version.h
      CHK include/linux/utsrelease.h
      SYMLINK include/asm -> include/asm-x86
make[3]: *** No rule to make target `kernel/bounds.c', needed by `kernel/bounds.s'. Stop.
    make[2]: *** [prepare0] Error 2
    make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28-11-generic'
    make[1]: *** [modules] Error 2
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/rtl8192u_linux_2.6.0006.1031.2008/ieee80211'
    make: *** [install] Error 2
So after using Google and getting very little information about this, I gave up and proceeded with the ndiswrapper.

I do have the Kernel Headers installed and using Apt-get I do have the kernel sources, although the Kernel apt-get provided where put in the /usr/src/ directory but are still compressed (linux-source-2.6.28.tar.bz2).

Re: 9.04 / USB dLink (DWA-130) / Secure Networks not working, Unsecure Work

As you can tell from my date and beans, I'm new and unable to fully decipher all the outputs, but what I do see looks like mine did, other than the actual driver used. I never did get it to work with WEP after trying from the beta version until current, but I did get it with WPA2 or unencoded. I did find that I have to plug it in after booting up or else: failure and it won't even allow ubuntu to shut down unless unplugged before attempting shutdown. I did not get the repeated requests for passwords many have listed in their threads--it just simply would lock up and I had to actually do a power button shutdown. I will be happy to help, but many other are way more qualified.

I don't have that problem, thank goodness!

Is there anyone able to offer any incite to this issue?

    Thanks.

Re: 9.04 / USB dLink (DWA-130) / Secure Networks not working, Unsecure Work

Okay, I think I got it. I decided I would re-read the readme.txt file for the Linux Driver and try method #2. BINGO! Able to connect to WPA2 and browsing just fine.

I have not rebooted yet to see if I will have to run the wlan0up script again. I hope not. I would like it to automatically connect upon boot-up.

Here is the Install Section of the readme.txt

    ================================================== =============================
    Installation
    ================================================== =============================
    <<Method 1>>
Runing the scripts accomplish all operations including building up modules
from the source code, installing driver to the kernel and starting up the nic.
    1. Build up the drivers from the source code
    make

    2. Install the driver to the kernel
    make install
    reboot

    3. bring up wlan if nic is not brought up by GUI, such as NetworkManager
    ifconfig wlan0 up
Note: use ifconfig to check whether wlan0 is brought up and use iwconfig to check your wlan interface name,
since it may change wlan0 to wlan1,etc.

    <<Method 2>>
Or only load the driver module to kernel and start up nic.
    1. Build up the drivers from the source code
    make
    2. Copy firmware to /lib/firmware/ or /lib/firmware/(KERNEL_VERSION)/
    cp -rf firmware/RTL8192U /lib/firmware
    or
    cp -rf firmware/RTL8192U /lib/firmware/(KERNEL_VERSION)
Note: This depends on whether (KERNEL_VERSION) subdirectory exists under /lib/firmware

    3. Load driver module to kernel and start up nic.
    ./wlan0up
Note: when "insmod: error inserting 'xxxx.ko': -1 File exists" comes out
after run ./wlan0up, please run ./wlan0down first, then it should
    be ok..
Note: If you see the message of "unkown symbol" during ./wlan0up, it
is suggested to build driver by <<Method 1>>.

Card is confirmed to work now at least. I'll post my results after bootup, and submit my findings to the various Linux WiFi Hardware Compatibility Lists I found up my hours of research.

Re: 9.04 / USB dLink (DWA-130) / Secure Networks not working, Unsecure Work

Okay, I've rebooted Ubuntu. Yes the USB Adapter works, but will not automatically initiate. I have to open a terminal, cd to the uncompressed driver folder location (/usr/src/rtl8192u_linux_2.6.0006.1031.2008s/) and and run the wlan0up script provided using sudo inorder to get the card working. Then the Network Manager is able to use it, and I can connect upon entering my key ring password.

Is it possible to run the scripts upon booting Ubuntu 9.04 up? If so could someone advise me how to do this?

PS: I've attached the scripts to this post.

Re: 9.04 / USB dLink (DWA-130) / Secure Networks not working, Unsecure Work

    I tried adding the script to init.d, made it executable, then used " sudo update-rc.d wlan0up start 80 2 3 4 5 . ", but didn't have luck with it.

Is there away I can execute this script, as root, automatically upon automatically logging into the user account on my mythbuntu 9.04 install? Is there anyother way?

This dang wireless stuff in Linux is crazy difficult!

Red face Re: 9.04 / USB dLink (DWA-130) / Secure Networks not working, Unsecure Work

    Hi,

I'm so new it can be counted in hours on one hand I am using the USB dLink mentionned here and distro 9.04 jaunty. I looked at the information that you posted, but my with newness I don't know where to start. I know it's a lot to ask, but I would greatly appreciate a step by step. If at least you could point me in the right direction for things like "install driver in the kernell".

I have the Windows driver, but that's it (I used to run it under XP and just switched to Ubuntu yesterday).

Many thanks for any help you can offer. Mahalo!
