Smile SOLVED Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P board, Core i7, nVidia 9600gt, DRW-22B1LT compatible

    Hi!

I need a replacement for my Pentium 4 based setup. I'm thinking of buying this system. The old one is getting unstable (hdd's and power failing) and it can't cope with my dual 1680x1050 screen resolution. (ex: no smooth sd youtube playback)

    Usage:
    - Virtualisation
    - Photoshop (in wine and vm)
    - Video-editing (i'll be trying editing in blender)
    - HD multimedia playback

    Goals:
    - Out of the box compatible with ubuntu 9.04 64bit
    - As silent as possible

    System:
    Code:
Case: Antec LifeStyle Solo € 80,40
    MOBO: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P (1366, DDR3, PCI-E) € 225,50
    CPU: Intel Core i7-920 2660MHz LGA1366 8M € 245,95
    RAM: 2x Corsair 6 GB PC3-10666 memory (TR3X6G1333C9) € 179,90
PSU: Cooler Master 700W Silent Pro Active (RS700-AMBAD3-EU, M700)
                                                                 € 94,90
    Graphics: Asus GeForce 8600 GT 256MB DDR3 (PCI-e, 2x DVI, HDCP)
EN8600GT⁄SILENT⁄HTDP⁄256M. Swap from Asus. 3 months
              garantee € 59,95
Burner: Asus Lightscribe Burner, DRW-22B1LT, Dual Layer,
              Sata, black (RETAIL) € 29,95
    HDD: Samsung 1TB Spinpoint HD103UJ(SATA II 7200RPM 32MB)€ 72,85
    Budget is about € 1000,-
Total: € 999,35 with taxes and shipping, This store handled my 2x Samsung 2232BW order fast and they were quick in answering my questions about a year ago. So I'd like to keep to what they have in stock (items not in stock got a delivery date of 3 days).

    Possible issues I've recognised:
Read some ethernet issues, but seems to be vista dualboot related. Gigabyte EX58 extreme board from a friend gave no problems with livecd

Couldn't find info about the compatibility of the Asus burner DRW-22-B1LT, but the DRW-20B1LT is compatible. I'm willing to take the risk.

It's been a while since I last build my own setup so,
    your thoughts please!

PS: I´ll be going from a geekbench of 1151 to about 8500

Nothing's fail-safe, but that looks pretty promising to me.

Everything on your list (that I could find, anyway) seems compatible.

And with the LiveCD you can check to make sure that everything runs.

If you do decide to buy it, post here and tell us of how everything works when it arrives.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for your reply,

I'll give a shoutout about my experiences, and i'll add itto the HCL when done testing.

I think you shouldn't ask if your not planning on giving back to the community

Setup works out of the box with Ubuntu 64bit,

Not tested (yet): burning (cd ripping with 33x)
