But you have to do it every time you boot up. I'm using the UM185C on ubuntu 9.10, so far it has worked for both the desktop and netbook remix.
thanks michael i ejected it and then it recognized it as a modem and connected . I tried Jeff's instructions but he kept putting the cart before the horse....saying that you have to enter this command but oh, wait you should have already made this an exec by this command....confusing! especially for newbies to Linux like myself. Thanks for the tip on the eject/cd thingy.

You know, thousands of others have used those instructions without issue. They are clearly laid out and as dumbed down as possible

If you are capable of reading and following instructions it really works pretty easily >.<

Re: HOWTO: Cricket Wireless A600 Broadband Modem

Ok I'm running Kubuntu 10.04 and among other problems with video glitches and the like. I'm having trouble installing the Cal-comp A600 modem. I followed all the directions on the first post and it works somewhat. It lights up the signal bar lights and shows the signal strength. But it disappears from the connected devices list. Where it showed it as an optical drive.
I ran lsusb and it showed an entry that I narrowed down to having to be the modem. But it wasn't labelled as such.
Also...lastly, Mobile Broadband and Wireless is greyed out under Configure - KDE Control Module. So I'm not sure what to do after the somewhat successful flipflop. I've been on IRC almost all day and no one there can help me. I'd really love to see this issue resolved very soon.
    Thanks in advance.

Did you get it sorted after we talked on AIM last night Sonic? You need to install the gnome network manager and use it to connect to the modem.

    Regards,
    ~Jeff

No...apparently I need to download it since it doesn't appear to be on the Kubuntu CD. Any idea where I could get a deb for Gnome network manager and the keyring (I need that too right?) ?
At least that way I could put it on a thumbdrive or an external and move it over.

Re: HOWTO: Cricket Wireless A600 Broadband Modem

Congrats on the five min, been playing for two weeks, getting closer but no brass ring yet
    See device in network manager
click on device and it tries to connect but msg comes up disconnected
I think I need to increase the sleep time from ten to twenty in the flip flop but so far haven't been able to find where it is with search.

I hope this gets it working.

this is the output with the devise pluged in

how and exactly what do I open, and how do I open it to change the time.

LOST IN LINUX! lol from an old fart

    THOUGHTS

I believe the devise is switching
When it is plugged in I see it under connections
when I click on the connection I get a msg on screen (disconnected, with the sig symbol and a red x
My problem may be in the network settings

My other problem is that I haven't used cli since the VIV 20 days back in the 60s
I've forget the little I knew then

I am at my wits end on this
Yes! I've read all 24 pages of the post
I know that your post has been dummied down
    I've tried the wvdial
    I've tried the gnome ppp
    I've reset the network connection
    I've rechecked the phone number--#777
    I've rechecked the user name--6624206266@mycricket.com

    I've rechecked pasword--cricket

So if the thing is connected the question is to what?
Is the connection internal to the computer only.
If this is the case then am I missing a step
Is my procedure missing some step

    Thank you for any help

    Art,
In addition to following the previous instructions about flipflop.sh exactly as given the following may help you: In the Cricket program "window" in Windows where you connect/disconnect you will see the following menu choices along the top:
    Session Tools Options Help
Click on help. One of the options from the drop down menu will be "About". Please click on it. Try using the number listed for MDN for your username. And use the number listed as MIN as your password when you set up in UBUNTU keeping #777 as your phone # as you previously stated.
