Kubuntu 9.04 fails to connect to wireless networks

Kubuntu 9.04 fails to connect to wireless networks! Though the new network manager might look cool, it fails to connect to any wireless WPA network with a hidden SSID.

I guess the developers must have followed the course "How to loose the battle with Windows again"...

Unbelievable that (k)ubuntu versions are released with such MAJOR bugs.

    I agree.
    Ubuntu 7.10, 8.04, 8.10 & 9.04 all have this problem.
Puppy Linux and PCLinoxOS do not have this problem.
IMHO, the Wireless 'Network Connections' is the one "Trouble Spot" in an other wise Excellent Linux O.S.!
    I wish I could help.

Re: Kubuntu 9.04 fails to connect to wireless networks

Kubuntu 9.04 is a slight improvement over 8.10 in that it recognizes wireless networks, even if it won't connect to them. The last few versions of Ubuntu, on the other hand, have supported my wifi card OTB, and even before that, all that was needed was some minor tweaking.

Re: Kubuntu 9.04 fails to connect to wireless networks

The title should be "Kubuntu 9.04 fails to connect to hidden wireless networks"

I just installed Kubuntu 9.04 to a secondary partition, and could not connect to a hidden secured (WPA) wireless network.

Can someone with a bit more authority on the subject confirm this as a bug, or is there a different method? I found this as the number one post for a Google search of "kubuntu connect hidden wireless network" and would appreciate an answer on this issue quickly. I will continue searching...

My method (not entirely sure, since I had to reboot into Ubuntu) which did not work:
Right click on network manager icon
Go to "Manage networks" (or similar)
Go to Wireless tab and add new
Type in name of hidden network
    Click on tab called "Security"
Select WPA and type in password
Click OK, Click OK of "Manage Network" thing
No auto connection, none shows up with the left-click either

Can someone else confirm that Kubuntu 9.04 cant connect to hidden wireless?

Re: Kubuntu 9.04 fails to connect to wireless networks

    And I quote:

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-re...es/+bug/339313
"Kubuntu Jaunty: Cannot Connect To Wireless Network with WEP shared key"

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...er/+bug/330811
"Can't connect to a hidden network"

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-re...es/+bug/339313
"Kubuntu Jaunty: Cannot Connect To Wireless Network with WEP shared key"

And there is more: It appears that the Kubuntu developers knew that the included network manager did not work, yet they included it. Now, you can apparently install some other wireless network manager and have it work, but everything on Kubuntu requires a working network connection, so it's a big F U if you can only get wireless. Like me.

Let me say it this way: If you installed Kubuntu 9.04 and can only connect to a hidden and secure wireless network, the Kubuntu developers essentially said "Screw You".

Well, if someone can tell me I am wrong, I will apologize, otherwise I say "Screw You" to Kubuntu.

Other quotes by people who may or may not be similarly minded:

"Shipping code that is known to be broken in a system which is ostensibly designed for new Linux users to find easy to use is disgraceful, frankly, when there is at least one existing solution that seems to be better."

"I would understand if this was an old issue that developers were still looking to resolve, however these types of networks worked just fine in Kubuntu 8.10, so there is absolutely no excuse for Canonical to have released Kubuntu 9.04 with such a huge bug."

"There should not have to be a workaround installed on a fresh install of Kubuntu. If it doesn't work then dont' put it in."

"I must add that I find Ubuntu KDE in its present form a rather unpleasant experience"

Based on my experience I must disagree. I've posted about my problems getting wireless to work with 9.04 (Kubuntu), but the short version is: All I did was boot my HP dv6000 laptop after installing Intrepid and it found, configured, and immediately had working its Broadcom BCM43xx card. Silly me, I thought Jaunty would be just as painless! Nope. I NEVER did get wireless working and finally gave up. I'm back on Intrepid now.

Have you tried entering the mac address of your wireless router in the BSSID and MAC fields in Network Manager? I was unable to connect to my wireless router until I did this. Still a bug in my opinion as you may not know the BSSID / MAC of a router, but this may allow you to use Jaunty until it's fixed.
