Question How would I create a long range network?

Hello everyone, I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit and I have a few questions. I'm trying to create a long range network. What I mean by this, is that I have public folder (We will name it "Public" for this example) and I want my brother to be able to access it from anywhere he connects to. I live on one side of Florida, and he lives on the other side in Tampa. I also want to have other users to be able to connect with a password. We just want to be able to share files.

So what do I need to do to create this? FTP server? VPN server? I really don't know much about networking, but I'm pretty much fluent in everything else computer wise. Still a bit new to linux though.

If anyone could help me with this, that'd be great.

SSH/VPN sounds like a possibility. The machine would need to be visible from internet - which probably means port-forwarding from router.

    Oops, gotta run...
