    Please help me to enable clean URLs in Drupal (AllowOveride)

    Hi,

    I'm a newb at Apache admin

    I am running Apache2 and PHP5 on Gutsy Desktop, 7.10.

    I am already running three sites happily using a Virtual server setup, two are simple static sites and one is a Wordpress site. All work fine.

    I have now installed Drupal in a sub-directory of my Wordpress site. Not sure if this is a crazy thing to do... I simply created a new directory called 'd' inside the directory in which Wordpress is installed and installed Drupal there.

    The installation went fine and everything seems to work but I want to enable 'clean URLs'.

    To do this I need to enable mod_rewrite.

    I do:
    sudo a2enmod rewrite
    This module is already enabled!

    So far so good.

    I then need to Set AllowOveride from 'None' to 'All'. This is where I get lost.

    It seems I should be setting this in my apache2.conf file but I can't see where to make the change. This is the file:

    HTML Code:
    <code>
    #
    # Based upon the NCSA server configuration files originally by Rob McCool.
    #
    # This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
    # configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
    # See [url]http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/[/url] for detailed information about
    # the directives.
    #
    # Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
    # what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
    # consult the online docs. You have been warned.
    #
    # The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
    # 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
    #     whole (the 'global environment').
    # 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server,
    # which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
    # These directives also provide default values for the settings
    #     of all virtual hosts.
    # 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
    # different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
    #     same Apache server process.
    #
    # Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
    # of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
    # server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
    # with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "/var/log/apache2/foo.log"
    # with ServerRoot set to "" will be interpreted by the
    # server as "//var/log/apache2/foo.log".
    #

    ### Section 1: Global Environment
    #
    # The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache,
    # such as the number of concurrent requests it can handle or where it
    # can find its configuration files.
    #

    #
    # ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
    # configuration, error, and log files are kept.
    #
    # NOTE! If you intend to place this on an NFS (or otherwise network)
    # mounted filesystem then please read the LockFile documentation (available
    # at <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.1/mod/mpm_common.html#lockfile>);
    # you will save yourself a lot of trouble.
    #
    # Do NOT add a slash at the end of the directory path.
    #
    ServerRoot "/etc/apache2"

    #ErrorDocument 404 /missing.html

    #ErrorDocument 402 [url]http://www.example.com/subscription_info.html[/url]

    # Putting this all together, we can internationalize error responses.
    #
    # We use Alias to redirect any /error/HTTP_<error>.html.var response to
    # our collection of by-error message multi-language collections. We use
    # includes to substitute the appropriate text.
    #
    # You can modify the messages' appearance without changing any of the
    # default HTTP_<error>.html.var files by adding the line:
    #
    #   Alias /error/include/ "/your/include/path/"
    #
    # which allows you to create your own set of files by starting with the
    # /usr/share/apache2/error/include/ files and copying them to /your/include/path/,
    # even on a per-VirtualHost basis. The default include files will display
    # your Apache version number and your ServerAdmin email address regardless
    # of the setting of ServerSignature.
    #
    # The internationalized error documents require mod_alias, mod_include
    # and mod_negotiation. To activate them, uncomment the following 30 lines.

    #    Alias /error/ "/usr/share/apache2/error/"
    #

    There is nothing in my /etc/apache2/httpd.conf file.

    In my 'Sites enabled' directory I have a file relating to each of my sites.

    This is the contents of the file relating to my Wordpress site:
    HTML Code:
    code>
    <VirtualHost *>
    ServerAlias www.mysite.co.uk
    ServerName mysite.co.uk
    ServerAdmin webmaster@mysite.co.uk

    DocumentRoot /var/www/mysite/
    <Directory />
    Options FollowSymLinks
    AllowOverride None
    </Directory>
    <Directory /var/www/mysite/>
    Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
    AllowOverride All
    Order allow,deny
    allow from all
    </Directory>

    ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/mysite_error.log

    # Possible values include: debug, info, notice, warn, error, crit,
    # alert, emerg.
    LogLevel warn

    CustomLog /var/log/apache2/tmysite_access.log combined
    ServerSignature On
    </VirtualHost>
    </code>
    Should I make an addition to that file?

    Hope someone can help. I'm completely stumped. Nothing seems to work.

    I am restarting Apache after each change to a file btw.

    I am mostly referring to http://drupal.org/node/134439

    Thanks

    Re: Please help me to enable clean URLs in Drupal (AllowOveride)

    Hi,

    I'm sure this must be to do with me installing Drupal inside my Wordpress install...?

    I just tried adding

    <Directory /var/www/mysite/d/>
    Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
    AllowOverride All
    Order allow,deny
    allow from all
    </Directory>

    inside my /etc/apache2/sites available/mysite file but I still get the error:

    Not Found

    The requested URL /d/admin/settings/clean-urls was not found on this server.

    Still stumped...

    Same here. The following worked for me. On Ubuntu 8.04 LTS desktop.

    STEPS
    1. Type in the following command in TERMINAL
    Code:
    sudo a2enmod rewrite
    2. Type in the following command in TERMINAL
    Code:
    /etc/init.d/apache2 force-reload
    3. Type in the following command in TERMINAL to restart apache.
    Code:
    sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
    4. Go to http://localhost/foldernamehere/?q=a...ngs/clean-urls
    or
    http://localhost/?q=admin/settings/clean-urls

    Refresh this page.
    The following message will be display on a green background "Your server has been successfully tested to support this feature."
    Select UNABLED
    Click on SAVE CONFIGURATION button.

    If it doesn't work. Redo above step 2 & 3. Wait 2 minutes. Continue to step 4.

    Onopoc,

    Thanks for that one!

    I've had to put the project down for a bit so I can't even remember where I am with it...
