Nothing but audio issues ever since Ubuntu made PulseAudio the default.
Thinking of following a How To.... to Remove PulseAudio.
Did 9.04 FIX this?

What is seems to be the problem? I dont know but I think it will still be default in the next release. well i do have encounter problem sometime but it doesn't annoying that much.
We must reboot often. ALL sound stops working. We reboot and it comes back.
This is bad.
Also, working with programs like Kino has been a nightmare.... until we followed the WORKAROUND How To to get Kino to NOT use PulseAudio.
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF PULSEAUDIO?
WHY WHY WHY do we need it?
WHY WHY WHY is it still the default????

According to the info below your avatar, you use Gutsy, which did not have pulseaudio. Are you sure the problem is what you state?
I had Pulseaudio installed with Ibex and now with Jaunty. While I haven't had any major issues, I have had questions from confused beginners asking what all the devices are if they click on a drop-down for audio devices.
The problem arises because, all the ALSA detected devices are listed along with Pulseaudio detected devices. For a new user, how are they supposed to know which is the correct device. Also, when volumes are too low should they be adjusting the ALSA mixer or the Pulseaudio mixer?
If Pulseaudio is to be used, then there should be some option, set by default, that will hide non-pulseaudio devices.

To answer your initial question, Pulse audio was working pretty well by the time it hit Intrepid (8.10), and in 9.04, the vast majority have no problems at all.
I highly recommend going to at least 8.10. Personally, I'm using 9.04, and my sound is better than it is under Windows XP. Were it I, I'd back up all my personal data and do a fresh install. To check it out, download and burn the Live CD and play around with it for a while under the "make no changes to my pc" mode. Play some music and see what you think.
I'd also recommend that you go through this HowTo:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...+stops+working
I went through it and it made my sound even better under both 8.10 and, to a lesser extent (as I said above, it was already working extremely well) 9.04.
That's my .02 - I hope it helps...
