wallpaper for each desktop????

hi... i am new to ubuntu.. just two question to ask..
1) we know that in ubuntu we can switch between desktops is there any option so that when we switch to other desktop can we add separate wallpaper for each desktops... is it possible .. don laugh just clarified..

2) i am using matlab on ubuntu 8.10... if i install compiz i cant run matlab... if i install matlab then i cant run compiz... is there any solution to this..?
