Take backup your home folder and install 11.10 again and then restore that backup .
or
while installing the Ubuntu change the mount point to /home and then install the OS again.
These are the two safe ways i know for your issue.
Dont miss anything even it is small. one small pin is enough to bring down a man.
thanks
One of the options in the installer for 11.10 will also attempt to install without disturbing the home folder, even if it is not on a separate partition. I can't remember how the option is worded, but I'v'e used it on a couple of machines with success. It's still a good idea to do a full backup though, in case things go horribly, tragically wrong!
