160GB hard drive recognized as 39.5 GB.

My fiancée's laptop hard drive died earlier this week. I ordered a replacement for newegg, and the problem with the replacement is rather bizarre.

The drive is a Fujitsu MHZ2160BH-G2, which is supposed to be a 160 GB drive. The model number is correctly identified by the operating system, but the drive size is reported as 39.5 GB (note, this is not the partition size). Even the bios identifies the drive as 39.5 GB.

I haven't been able to find any information to indicate that anyone else has had this problem. I suspect it's a firmware problem, but I can't find anywhere to get a firmware update.

Does anyone have any ideas, or should I just RMA the drive?

That sure is strange. Is the bios on the laptop up to date? Do you have any external 2.5" enclosure? It would be handy to troubleshoot by putting it in one and seeing if it is recognised as 160GB. There are some utils here which may be of use: http://www.fujitsu.com/us/services/c...utilities.html
