sftp copies entire video file to var/tmp directory before playing

I have an older computer running xubuntu that I use to store videos and other things in... I do stuff on it through ssh and sftp... I have used ubuntu (gnome) for about a year now and just recently gave KDE a try...

unlike gnome when I try to open a video file KDE will copy the whole file to a var/tmp/kdecache-me/krun directory before playing it... Is there a way to make KDE start playing the video immediately after opening it?

I suspect that this issue isn't KDE specific but, rather, related to the video player you are using. What video player are you using?
