ok i removed the duplicate device section in xorg.conf.

there are talk of a virtual setting affecting this freeze bug
i dont know if that is the same as what is shown in the ubuntu geek
website, it got too confusing for me to calculate what setting would
be needed the numbers didnt work out for me, so i left it with no setting..

Sometimes lm-sensors don't callibrate properly, check your temp in the BIOS and see if that corresponds to what you see in Ubuntu.

Well I won't run it, since I'm not in a position to reboot soon. But this is my unaltered /proc/mtrr
    Code:
    reg00: base=0x0feda0000 ( 4077MB), size= 128KB, count=1: write-back
    reg01: base=0x07d800000 ( 2008MB), size= 8MB, count=1: uncachable
    reg02: base=0x07e000000 ( 2016MB), size= 32MB, count=1: uncachable
    reg03: base=0x0ffe00000 ( 4094MB), size= 2MB, count=1: write-protect
    reg04: base=0x000000000 ( 0MB), size= 2048MB, count=1: write-back
    reg05: base=0x0e0000000 ( 3584MB), size= 256MB, count=1: write-combining
The only difference after running fixmtrr is count=2 on write-combining.

Not sure if this was posted already, but I found a WIKI that worked like a charm and was much easier than this guide. I appreciate the info and time given in this thread, but all that seems like overkill when this WIKI solution is as easy as an apt-get install of a later intel driver.

I used the "Reverting the Jaunty Xorg intel driver to 2.4x". Now I'm wondering if this one is more permanent fix. It looks like they updated the Intel Xorg driver. Has anyone tried this newest method?

that looks like its about rolling back to the old intrepid drivers, the end result of this is is testing out the bleeding edge intel drivers being developed....down the road this guide will be much more beneficial as they continue to improve the drivers, but I can see why you might use your way, I actually used this guide, but instead of using the 2.6.30-rc2 I am using the 2.6.29.1, which I have found to have equally if not better performance enhancements, as well as being a stable kernel....for instance I found a patch so that I can build vmware modules on 2.6.29.1 however since 2.6.30 is still in testing I would have to figure one out for myself.....Also just to throw in my own experience thus far, I custom compiled the 2.6.29.1 kernel to be preemptive....not sure if it really boosts the graphics in reality, but it sure makes it feel a lot faster and responsive

I also have the same question as Area51mafia, the only difference after running the script is the count, does that essentially mean it isn't doing anything and that it was ok to begin with?

I tried that first, and it was a big improvement over the default Jaunty situation, but the solution in this thread improves performance even more, particularly for video playback (at least that's my perception). I'd say if it doesn't break any of your other drivers it's best to go with the cutting-edge intel drivers than to revert to the old ones.

Also there was a lot of corruption/artifacting in Compiz with the Intrepid drivers for me that's gone completely with UXA.

From reviewing your Xorg.0.log, the cause is quite simply due to the fact that you were using an xorg.conf with two "Device" sections, and the second one was being ignored.

    Reset your xorg.conf:
    Code:
    $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Then, edit this fresh xorg.conf according to the guide, without making any further customizations.
