updated intrepid, now no visual effects

Greetings...

I have been using intrepid with absolutely perfect results since it's beginning. Graphics have always worked w/ 3d acceleration etc. until the last kernel update to 2.6.28.11. At that point, I lost all visual effects, compiz etc. 2D is ok. I went back to 28.9 and it all came back. I modified grub to boot to .28.9 as default. After reboot, visual effects disappeared again, the kernel used was .28.9 as expected but the effects were still missing. Going back to .11 or returning to .9 or anything else doesn't work

Anyone have ideas how I can get my effects back?

My video is i82865G onboard.

I found out if I go back to the 2.6.27.3rt everything is back. Beats me...
