    Just an idea:
    Why don't you execute
    Code:
    sudo nvidia-xconfig
right after the installation, and after the reboot, you'll automatically log in with the fresh driver.
I did it on this way (couple of time on other distros), and it's working.

It doesn't work for everyone, simple as. Haven't really looked into a reason and figured out why though.

On my machines, X refuses to load because of missing extension modules. These extensions are kept in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions.
The way that the guide is panned out, it means that you do 90% of the work in a GUI, the exception being the command to run the nvidia installer.

This is, in my opinion, much easier for the new user wanting to try something adventurous out, as I'm sure that most of us have been stuck without a GUI for at least a day trying to get NViDIA tamed.

    Regards
    Iain

During the installation I was prompted with a message saying that it can't open libglx.so for read and saying it doesn't exist when it does. can anyone help me out?
    Try:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get --reinstall install xserver-xorg-core
then uninstall any manual NViDIA installation:
    Code:
    sudo nvidia-uninstall
    And try installing it again...

If you run into problems still, could you put the contents of your /var/log/nvidia-installer.log file into a pastebin.

Also, the latest stable NViDIA driver is the 180.51

Ive got a Dell XPS M1530 with Intrepid Ibex.

    The first step goes fine....

    but second step (this code)
    sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`
doesn't go all right. It says that this step is to ensure that i have all the build-essencial problems and the answer my terminal give me is what follows:

    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
Package linux-headers-2.6.24-24-generic is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package linux-headers-2.6.24-24-generic has no installation candidate

    Is that ok?

I've just tried it on a hardy chroot, and everything seems to be in order. Ensure that you have the hardy-updates repository enabled, and try again.

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-2.6.24-24-generic

What type of card do you own?

Also, can you bring the default X configuration back and post your syslog.
    Code:
    grep -i "nvidia\|NVRM" /var/log/syslog
