HELP!! sbackup and now no space left!!

I tried to backup my system with sbackup, choosing an external HDD as target directory for the backup file.
Something must have gone wrong, as I noticed I have no space left after a while.
So I checked in the default dir for the backup file, /var/backup, and indeed the file was there. It was incomplete, as I didn't have enough space in my internal HDD for it.
So I opened a Nautilus with root rights and moved the file to the trash.

    BUT!!!

    - It's not in the trash,
    - it's not in /var/backup
    - nor can I find it with locate (in the terminal) or with the GUI search option
    - and my HDD is completely out of space (Free space: 0 bytes), my firefox bookmarks disappeared, everything is slow.

Even after transferring 5 GB of films to the external HDD no space was freed (still: Free space: 0 bytes).

    HELLO?! HELP!!!!!
