brightness applet - "cannot get laptop panel brightness"

    hi
my laptop screen is a bit on the dark side so I added the brightness applet to the panel but I get the message that "cannot get laptop panel brightness"
is there another way to adjust brightness in ubuntu?
    or to config the applet?

Go to system (I think preferences are here cuz I'm using cairo dock) > preferences > power management > (tab) on Ac power and adjust screen brightness there.

    What version are you using?
