Epiphany is the default browser for Gnome. Definitely worth a try.
epiphany and opera are very good...
w3m (a text based Web browser) is installed by default.

midori? low on features, but that doesn't slow it down.
konquerer is kind of a neat tool/browser

my vote on epiphany as a 2nd browser whenever FF hiccups.

I've used Konquorer extensively, too. But if the question is 'what's lighter than firefox as a backup?' then konq is not the answer.
