Right click the desktop, go to "Change desktop backgrond", click "Add" and chose the background you want.
Easily done: choose System->Preferences->Appearance->Background and have at it.
If you want a different wallpaper and icon and other similar stuff,you can look for Art Manager under Applications->Add/Remove and it will let you dowload the previews of the wallpaper & co,before you download them.

Don't apologize. The freedom to choose your own background, among others, is yours.
Try devianart for background/wallpaper options. Other sites exist, too. Google for "wallpapers"
