Social Ubuntu let's have a community experiment

Ok I'm a bit Nervous about posting this as I'm unsure how it would be taken by the community. That being said I don't know if any of you have heard of ning.com but it allows you to create your own social networking style website, and it's free. I thought it might be a great way for the ubuntu community to get social, especially in light of OMGPP being shut down. The point here is that These forums are meant to be support forums and have a strictly enforced set of rules. Which I think is a great Idea it keeps these forums pointed exactly at what they are meant to be pointed at, Ubuntu Support and Development. I'm just hoping to help give the community a place to socialise, an after office hours hang out if you will..lol.

You don't have to like it you don't have to try it, but if your interested the web address is: http://myubuntu.ning.com

Thanks for taking to the time to read my post.

Those "create your own website for free in just 3 minutes"-web services suck. It's all so generic and just plain bad.

You know it doesn't really matter that You probably didn't even investigate the website. However I will tell you that for free they offer some pretty heavy features, comparable to myspace, as well as some premium features. I don't know many people who have the resources to invest in such an experiment. (Server space, bandwidth, scripting knowledge, all rolled into one). I just want to be social with fellow Ubuntu users, and be allowed to touch the grey area's which you can't go into here at the Ubuntu forums. So I thought this website offered a nice, way to do so without personal expense since I can't afford to start my own social networking website.

Nice initiative, I won't be joining as I stay clear of social network sites, but it's great to see people trying to get the community together as this forum is losing it's social touch.

I've actually been thinking about working on a Free Software/Free Culture social networking community similar to Myspace or Facebook.

Maybe with some encouragement I'll get started on it. Running a cheap server and a CMS such as Elgg would be a simple enough start, and community donations and dedicated developers could make it into a reality.

I guess the only thing stopping me is getting a domain name, I haven't thought of a good one that wasn't taken.

You can get a free .co.cc domain, and there's plenty of them available.

Some cost money though (like ubuntulinux.co.cc linux.co.cc and ubuntu.co.cc )

and some are taken (mybuntu.co.cc )

Hey, I'm not sure I'll use it, but big props to MetalHellsAngel for representing the grand metropolis of the big E.
