Disable unlock keyring for network manager on startup

    Hi there,

I have set up a guest computer for our Bed and Breakfast running Ubuntu 8.10. The computer has two accounts, Administrator and Guest. It is set up so that Guest has no admin privileges, and will automatically log in when the computer is started. The user (person who is staying at our B&B) will be always changing and it would be inconvenient to tell them the password to login.

Unfortunately, when the computer starts I get this message:

    Unlock keyring

Enter password for default keyring to unlock

The application 'NetworkManager Applet' (/usr/bin/nm-applet) wants access to the default keyring, but it is locked
How can I allow the network manager applet to startup without having to enter in the password? Or can I add nm-applet to the default keyring somehow as trusted application?

    Thankyou

Unfortunately, this is a known problem related to automatic login.

I deleted the default keyring and created a new one without password. I still get the warning, but I ignore and close it. It will access the network anyway.

The only way I got around this was to create a new user account (deleting the old one is optional, but recommended if you wish to keep the same username) and make sure I set everything up for automatic login then provide and empty keyring password when it first asks for one.

If you wish me to explain this in depth then just say.

Changing/removing the keyring password is quite easy to do (no need to remove the current keyring or mess with user accounts):

    1. open the keyring manager (Applications/Accessories/Passwords and Encryption Keys)

    2. Go to Edit/Preferences

    3. On the Password Keyrings-tab select the "login"-keyring & click "Change Unlock Password"

Now you can change the keyring password. If you use normal login set the password to same as your login password is to unlock the keyring automatically. If you use automatic login leave the new password fields empty to remove the keyring password.

McDuck, I tried to follow your instructions, in Jaunty Jackalope, but I can only get so far. In Preferences, I can't see any tab marked Password Keyrings. There are two marked Key Servers and Key Sharing, though. But nothing anywhere marked password, login or unlock
