aspire 7720z cpu fan will not turn on

I am relitivly new to Ubuntu and Linux, at the moment I am having an issue with the fan on my laptop turning on. It does work in vista, but does not turn on at all while running ubuntu, causing overheating and shutting down.
any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem on my Aspire 5720z.
I haven't found anything helpful through Google other than lm-sensors, which isn't really working so well.

I have not figured out what the issue was. I loaded a different version of ubuntu and the issue has gone away. I am using 9.4 and it is working well.
