just open any nautilus window (home folder will do) and go to edit>preferences>media tab. the rest is obvious.

Have opened the 'Home' folder and clicked on: edit >> preferences and a File Manager Preferences window opens. But there's no sign of a Media tab.

For Xubuntu (I don't have), you need to open something where your 'settings' are.

What your looking for is 'Removable Drives and Media'

Then in the box for dvd's replace what's in there (totem 'whatever') with this

    Code:
    vlc %f
(basically xubuntu still works like gutsy in this regard
