    Frequent Hard Locks using Synaptic

Recently, one of my systems running Ubuntu 8.04 32-bit is frequently hard locking while downloading or installing packages in Synaptic. I've tried pinging the machine over the network after it hard locks with no avail, so the only option left is to reboot. Downloading, installing, and removing packages using the commandline (i.e. apt-get) works fine but I'd prefer to be able to do it directly in Synaptic if it didn't crash my machine so much.

Synaptic is the only program that's causing hard locks on a regular basis so I know it's not another program that I'm also ran simultaneously.

Upgrading to 8.10 is not an option right now (some of my drivers are no longer supported in that version.)

Does anyone know of any possible causes to this problem or how to obtain more debugging information?

It doesn't lock on the password prompt, does it?

No, never had it lock on the password prompt.

Most of the time, it locks while installing the updates.. and a few times, while downloading them.
