    Icons

I have recently been scouring the web searching for some decent 128x128 Linux application icons but I have come up short. I have found a few decent ones, but most are too small for what I am using them for. Does anyone have any idea on where I can find large icons for programs like Evolution, MPlayer, aMule, Abiword, and Blender, as well as some more generic icons? I have found many icon packs but most are only 48x48.

    a complete icon pack has 16x16 28x28 48x48 64x64 and 128x128 sizes

so just get a complete one

actually, since gnome-2.4, only 128x128 is necessary as they are scaled as needed (scalable)....of course for stock icons that's a lot of unnecessary scaling but.....

yup, you'll find gnome short on the icon side, especially with apps.

    you could look here

...not sure what size/s they are

    deviantart.com

You can also go to any art web site that has icons, and look under Dock Icons (Mac OSX dock clones). They use 128x128 PNG's.
If you show me your Ubuntu I'll show you mine.

    Re: Icons

Jimmacs icons are in 48x48 unless he states otherwise.

The only problem with scaling icons down instead of having exact sized icons is that many times the scaled ones look horrible compared to exact sized icons. Many icon authors "tweak" the smaller icons to make them look good.

For a good treatise of icon scaling:
    Scalable Icon Issues

Jimmac also has come up with a possible solution to the icon scaling problem:
    Ideas for Icon Scaling

What I normally do to get 128x128 icons is pull down an svg icon theme and export the png as 128x128.

    Re: Icons

    nice reads
ppl have always said that about scaling down svg to 16 but ....*cough...who does that? Those that change their toolbar icons to 16? Sounds like a personal prob to me. 24 is not only the default for a reason but it is about as small as it gets 99% of the time and you can really only see a diff if you stick your face up to the monitor...and ...*cough...who does that in normal use? Those that change their toolbar icons to 16? Sounds like a personal prob to me. Not that I don't want an improvement in this area but it's hardly anything to be concerned about when concerning icons or their development. JMO

exporting to png is better in every aspect when concerning icons with any detail. We just read that though.

as you can see, major bugs that are shrugged off by devel and called minimal prevent these from being released in svg. Now, even if the bugs are fixed, I've done so much to them in the gimp, I doubt they can ever be released in svg and look near as good.
