Andrew I saw that the mplayer devs recommend using make distclean, especially before reporting any bugs.

I think I saw that post with Mr Hoyos on another forum . It is not perfect but I have tagged 'make distclean' on the end of the initial compilation. It starts getting messy if I also give 'svn up' instructions with 'make distclean' added in and I guess this way the svn tree should always be pretty clean.

I have a strong suspicion as well that many people use this guide to get a once off copy of MPlayer and never actually update this copy, which is fine as they have what they came for after all.

I was tossing up about the whole mencoder-x264 business before as x264 is a pain under Ubuntu and I am firmly convinced that encoding x264 is better with FFmpeg anyway. The option I was considering was:

    Code:
    $ ./configure --disable-mencoder --disable-x264
which leaves h264 playback in place and rids MPlayer of an encoder that is not all that widely used. Plus means an end to all the compilation problems / package management issues with MPlayer under Ubuntu. But in the end I decided to present a 'vanilla' MPlayer install with MEncoder and x264 encoding available.

I have no regrets about dumping gmplayer though .

    Thanks mate

Um, does ffmpeg have an AVC encoder or does it use x264?

    Hi Nullack,

Easiest way is to run ./configure with no options on a fresh FFmpeg svn tree and you will see:

    Code:
    Enabled encoders:
    ac3 mp2 pcm_u32be
    adpcm_adx mpeg1video pcm_u32le
    adpcm_g726 mpeg2video pcm_u8
    adpcm_ima_qt mpeg4 pcm_zork
    adpcm_ima_wav msmpeg4v1 pgm
    adpcm_ms msmpeg4v2 pgmyuv
    adpcm_swf msmpeg4v3 png
    adpcm_yamaha nellymoser ppm
    alac pam qtrle
    asv1 pbm rawvideo
    asv2 pcm_alaw roq
    bmp pcm_f32be roq_dpcm
    dnxhd pcm_f32le rv10
    dvbsub pcm_f64be rv20
    dvdsub pcm_f64le sgi
    dvvideo pcm_mulaw snow
    ffv1 pcm_s16be sonic
    ffvhuff pcm_s16le sonic_ls
    flac pcm_s24be svq1
    flashsv pcm_s24daud targa
    flv pcm_s24le tiff
    gif pcm_s32be vorbis
    h261 pcm_s32le wmav1
    h263 pcm_s8 wmav2
    h263p pcm_u16be wmv1
    huffyuv pcm_u16le wmv2
    jpegls pcm_u24be zlib
    ljpeg pcm_u24le zmbv
    mjpeg
Now if someone could tell me what the hell pcm_zork is?

lol, maybe some bizzare format from the zork games?

I dont see an ffmpeg avc encoder from that list.

Exactly, you will see it appear when you compile against x264. But note the decoders available on a bare svn FFmpeg:

Same for muxers / demuxers : h264 is enabled in a bare-bones FFmpeg install. Hence in MPlayer you will have h264 decoding even if you pass --disable-x264 to MPlayer. (Not sure about the libavcodec option for x264 that seems to have appeared at some time: --disable-x264-lavc )

Re: HowTo: Install the very latest MPlayer under Jaunty Jackalope

So Im confused as to what you mean mate by saying that encoding avd in ffmpeg is better?

I've now ditched the idea of using binary codecs for 64bit mplayer builds. I went through all the codec files and its only for realplayer. Since the codecs were done way back in 2007, ffmpeg has native realplayer support anyway. Realplayer technology is crap anyway. My ./configure is now:

    ./configure --prefix=/usr --confdir=/etc/mplayer

Theres also some great things coming. The wmapro decoder code is coming along and might soon be committed to ffmpeg. Also, some work is going on with vdpau deinterlacing and hopefully into the future we will get temporal spation deinterlacing accelerated on the GPU.....

Really, gstreamer and totem is crap in comparison to mplayer. Totem bugs go on for way too long without being fixed, such as the broken seeking in multi audio stream containers. And there is no deinterlacer at all. By statically linking ffmpeg and dvdnav into mplayer you have an easy way of keeping the significant players of multimedia on linux up to date in one swoop.

My apologies, I have had a bad week at work and as usual I have spoken less than clearly . I have found that FFmpeg is a better application than MEncoder for encoding anything. The syntax is much more intuitive to my mind, the program is better maintained, the presets make life so much easier and the FFmpeg guys have paid me big bucks to publicly support their product.

OK so maybe that last bit is not true . Which program do you prefer yourself for media encoding / transcoding?

    Its all good Andrew

I use a combination of x264, mencoder and ffmpeg.

Thanks for the guide. Didn't run into any problems compiling. SMPlayer has an annoying bug though. Every time the controls are displayed or disappear the desktop flashes for half a second. I'm using the version in the repositories. Maybe I'll check out the PPA and see if it's any better.
