    More than likely it is codec you are missing. As a fellow 64bit user I went ahead and downloaded the codecs suggested for the 32bit and untarred it also to the location they mentioned. It hasn't hurt thus far, and if it does cause a problem I reckon I can just delete the codecs, and only put the 64bit ones in there. You could give that a try. It is worth a shot. Let us know if that helps.
    I had already done that. It seems weird to me that I have like several dozen .dll and so on files from the 32bit codecs, but only a handful of them from the 64bit download, and they are like .so files?

    AFAIK, the 32bit codecs won't work with a 64bit mplayer (although it's possible to compile mplayer in 32bit mode [1]).

    The 64bit codec package provides only a few codecs (I think for rmvb mainly).

    And I believe the drive from FFmpeg/MPlayer is increasingly to fashion and work with native decoders/encoders rather than develop support for external codecs. Development of ffwmapro is a recent example.

    Hi,

    An interesting thread on MPlayer-dev-eng that shows that perhaps the days of the gmplayer are indeed numbered:

    Good to see SMPlayer getting the nod .

    hmm, so I guess I don't need all those 32bit codecs. I guess I could delete them. I only use it basically for capturing video from my tvcard. Of course I'm not sure which GUI apps are frontends for mplayer/mencoder, I use DEVEDE, DVDStyler, and Kdenlive and seem to have a good amount of things I can export to. I have tinkered with several others, but those seem to be the ones most used. Either way I have mplayer and ffmpeg newest versions installed, and don't 'seem' to be lacking codecs.

    Hi,

    Looks like support for the external, non-free amr libraries has been removed from libavcodec so for the moment there will be no amr playback for MPlayer. Consequently I have removed the amr / Medibuntu sections of the guide.

    FFmpeg now features support for opencore-amr so hopefully support for this will be added to MPlayer soon. When this happens I shall add the details to this guide.

    All the best,

    Andrew

    What is compiling x264 with the --fprofile option about? What is it good for, is it worth it, and how do you do it?

    Thanks for any input!

    If you are talking about gcc options I am afraid I have absolutely no idea . Sorry, perhaps others will have more of an idea?

    what exactly is mp4 output? Does this mean something else than being able to output an mp4 file?

    This does seems to turn on mp4 output:

    ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-shared --enable-visualize --enable-pic

    mp4 output: yes

    I believe this refers to the possibilities when using x264 itself from the commandline, rather than when x264 is utilised by MEncoder or FFmpeg. Have a look at your own copy as follows:

    Code:
    andrew@skamandros~$ x264 --help | head -n 11
    x264 core:68 r1185 2956905
    Syntax: x264 [options] -o outfile infile [widthxheight]

    Infile can be raw YUV 4:2:0 (in which case resolution is required),
      or YUV4MPEG 4:2:0 (*.y4m),
      or AVI or Avisynth if compiled with AVIS support (no).
    Outfile type is selected by filename:
     .264 -> Raw bytestream
     .mkv -> Matroska
     .mp4 -> MP4 if compiled with GPAC support (no)
    There has been a problem for some time with with gpac and x264 as can be seen in my own configuration above.
