video converter?

Ok can someone tell me what video converter software is available in the repo i try cache search but it's not helping. I want software that can convert video to other format ( not just a dvd ripper). I need software that can convert avi to vcd format or dvd.

You want ffmpeg and mencoder, but be careful not to read the man pages.

i just found out that those two software are already installed in my buntu. but when i hit alt+F2 and type mencoder it shows up nothing. Is it text based? is there any software that can do the same thing and have GUI?

This is either a failed attempt at reverse psychology, or the man pages are a poorly written confusing mess. Of course I think most of Linux's man pages are confusing, but maybe that's just me.

You can try HandBrake but it's not in the repositories. They have the .deb package for Ubuntu.
