    Hi,

I am trying to get X working in Ubuntu 10.10 on VIA Pico-ITX board P820-12L that has the same chipset VX855 but cannot figure it out what driver should I use.

I red whole topic about this I find it very usefull but also confusing.....do I use openchrome driver or via_chrome9 driver to get X working on Ubuntu 10.10 ....

I see tom09 that you are quite an expert so if you will be so kind to explain what source driver should I use to try to compile against 2.6.35-22 kernel that is default in Ubuntu 10.10?

    Any help would be appreciated....
    regards, Vladimir

The driver source from post #510 (you already found it, I suppose...) should be fine for U10.10. But you have to compile it for yourself, I don't have any U10.10 installable binary package ready yet. You will only need this kernel driver if you intend to use the VIA Xorg driver. It is not needed for the openchrome Xorg driver.
I didn't do the update to U10.10 yet, so I cannot tell whether the Xorg driver available at linux.via.com.tw for U10.04 works for you. You will at least need to replace the kernel driver in that package with the one mentioned above.
So, to answer your question which driver to use: Try the openchrome driver, if you don't need desktop effects or 3D/Video playback acceleration. If you feel adventurous, try VIA's driver but be prepared for any kind of problems.

I'll look into U10.10 for updated driver packages as soon as I have some free time...

    Wierd stuff....

    I tried several approaches....

    1. Tried to install driver from 10.04 ---> NO SUCCESS
    2. Tried install from svn openchrome ---> NO SUCCESS
    3. Tried to install xf86-video-chrome9-86a.50290.tar.bz2 + chrome9_drm-87a-55690.tar.gz ---> SUCCESS

I have changed Driver to "via" in xorg.conf and it works, but the picture flickers....not to much but has some interference that I cannot figure why.
I tried HDMI, and it works without the problem

I am attaching the xorg.conf file.

    thnx for the help...

Hello, tom09! I've tried Ubuntu 10.10 on Samsung NC20. It works fine except 3D driver. I used post #494 procedure. After rebooting I'd got Xorg crashed with error:

    Code:
    [ 14.856] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/via_drv.so
    [ 14.856] dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/via_drv.so: undefined symbol: miEmptyData
    [ 14.856] (EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/via_drv.so
    [ 14.856] (II) UnloadModule: "via"
[ 14.856] (EE) Failed to load module "via" (loader failed, 7)
[ 14.856] (EE) No drivers available.
    [ 14.856]
    Full log attached.

May be it caused by switching to xorg 1.9.0. I found similar problem with legacy nvidia driver: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...er/+bug/626974

    Re: Samsung NC20

I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10. It works fine except:

    - Gimp freezes the computer anytime I want to open an image (it loads fine, but then, when the image is opened and I move th mouse, it freezes).

    - The webcam in Cheese looks superzoomed, I mean, instead of being able to see my face on the webcam, I just see an eye, an ear, but it is impossible to see the whole face unless I stand far away from the computer (which is not ideal to chat...).

I haven't tested the mic yet.

Any ideas about how to solve the problems I detected?

Ah, I forgot to mention that when using Cheese or mplayer (the console-based version) the video is on top of everything. If I want to open a menu on the window border, the menu becomes hidden by the video.

    Re: Samsung NC20

    Hi all,

I have updated the Xorg+kernel drivers to work with U10.10. As before, unpack the attached zip archive and install the two .deb packages with
    Code:
    dpkg -i <package file name>
A few notes on the drivers:
    1. These drivers are for U10.10 *only* and won't work with earlier versions of Ubuntu.
    2. People upgrading from U10.04 should uninstall older versions of this driver.
    3. 3D acceleration (OpenGL) will NOT work correctly in U10.10. I cannot do anything about that atm, VIA needs to release an updated 3D driver for maverick first.

I hope they'll work for you. If not, just come back here and I'll try to help.

Edit: Uploaded a new version of the Xorg driver, which contains a fix for the "GIMP freeze" bug.
