Windows User trying to work with Ubuntu File System

I want to move a program to a single directory of programs (like program files in windows). Is there an equivalent of "Program Files" in linux? If not, where do people usually keep their programs?

Applications in Ubuntu seem to be independant and modular compared to a windows application (no ties ins to a registry or uninstaller that expects files to be in a static location). So it seems I can put it anywhere I want, but is there a standard of any kind?
