Volume buttons stopped working

I have a lenovo x61 notebook running ubuntu 8.10. Recently the volume buttons stopped working. When I press them the speaker animation comes up and I can see the volume gauge reacting correctly to my input, but no change in volume occurs. The volume control on my panel still works and volume controls in flash videos and such are still functional. This may have coincided with a security update but I'm not sure. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the problem.

i have the same problem now after i installed the pulseaudio audio mixer to get my USB-headset to work.. they worked fine before
