Howto set keyboard as in Windows US?

    Hi All,

I run Ubuntu 8.10. My current keyboard preferences are:
Keyboard model: Generic 105-key (intl) PC
Selected layouts: USA international (with dead keys)

When I want to type "can't", I have to press the following keys:
    can'<space>t

I would like to setup my keyboard as in windows XP, US international.
    Then I can type
    can't

In windows there's no need for pressing space, because windows understands that the letter t can't have an accent.

Could you please tell me what keyboard model and layout I have to choose?

    Best regards,
    Cedric

It's funny, but the issue is the other way around for me. I have to hit space when typing can't in Windows XP, but Ubuntu needs no spaces. The layout is just USA without dead keys or anything else.

    Cdwijs:
The US keyboard layout has no dead keys.
The US_International layout has dead keys (which provide various accents)

The US_International layout indeed alows me to make accents, but I haven't yet found out what Keyboard model / Layouts combination gives me the ability to type a ' without having to type a space after the '

Could you please post a screenshot of the correct settings?

    Best regards,
    Cedric

Use the layout that doesn't have dead keys.

(dead key means exactly what you are describing, key that doesn't produce a character until combined with some other key)

By the way, I was first going to post that you must be pressing completely wrong key but then I looked at the old US keyboard I have laying around and realized that it doesn't even have separate keys for accent and single quote.. I feel sorry for you, must be pretty annoying if you ever need to type anything else than English with that layout.
