Exclamation No sound in Kubuntu 8.04 after kernel recompile

I recently compiled my own flavor of the Ubuntu kernel using this guide as a reference as recommended by the Ubuntu KernelCompile howto. I used the latest kernel in the Hardy git tree, ( git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-hardy.git ) specifically Ubuntu-2.6.24-23.49 . The only change I made to my current config was setting the build system to compile to the athlon/k7 processor type -- nothing else was changed. Upon rebooting and selecting the new kernel from the GRUB boot menu, I noticed that I had no sound and that there was a warning notification on top of the Kmix icon -- hovering over it produces the tooltip "Mixer cannot be found" - other than that everything works fine. What is strange is that 'sudo lspci -vvvv' lists the Nvidia APU ( Audio Processing Unit ) but there's no trace of it in the output of dmesg.

    'sudo lspci -vvvv' output :
