Re: HOW TO: Display more than 5 bookmarks in gnome-panel "Places" menu

This is an excellent guide, many thanks! I'd been looking for a way to around this stupid restriction for eternity and I'm glad someone much smarter than me figured it out.

On another note why is such a simple modification so cumbersome? I love that you can do things like this in Linux don't get me wrong - open source is great for reasons just like this, but seriously recompiling the whole panel just to change one setting is a little like overkill. I think this UI restriction needs to be addressed in a future release, maybe a gconf option or setting? (though I'd imagine this wouldn't be a simple task!)

My solution was to install Ubuntu System Panel, screenie below. I prefer this much over the standard menu:
Attached Images Attached Images
DΞLL Precision M6500 "Big Dog": i7-820QM w/USB 3.0, 8.0GB DDR3-1333, 500GB 7200.3, nVidia Quadro FX 3800M 1.0GB DDR3, RGBLED, Intel 6300
.debBlog (cheat sheets)

JohnLau: I agree this is a bug. At the very least, this should be a (hidden) gconf option, but ideally there should be a GUI way to modify this parameter. Even better, gnome-panel should detect an appropriate value based on the size of your screen.

However, the link you posted is not to a bug report, but to this thread. Did you post the wrong link?

I realise that this is an old thread, but is there any way - outside of recompiling gnome panel - to change this?

Not sure why, but these smaller things seem to incite my Computer Rage the most.

I tried this, and it doesn't seem to work... This is the error I'm getting:

checking for intltool >= 0.40.0... ./configure: line 4284: intltool-update: command not found
found
configure: error: Your intltool is too old. You need intltool 0.40.0 or later.

I tried to update intltool, and it doesn't seem to be working... (My panel has been having weird problems lately, though- every time I try to add the quick-lounge-panel it crashes...)

Is it possible to somehow make a package for this, as someone else said?
