audacity "error while opening sound device ????"

Audacity works fine for a while in 8.10 then I get this message:

Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate.

Any suggestions?

Same error, but without any spots where it is working. If I switch device to ALSA: HDA VIA blahblahblah... Analog, then playback is at half-speed, roughly. The same device digital option gives no sound at all.

Same error here too. It's a pain, but exporting the file and playing elsewhere works. Not much of a solution if you use it frequently.

This worked great for me. Didn't have to follow all the instructions, I only had to delete the file! Started up Audacity and had audio playback. Really easy fix.
