Uh... Check the readme of the file?!?!

Well, a better thing is to go to system/admistration/synaptic package manager and search for the program you need in the search whatchamacallit

The package file will download and install to you pc... I mean Ubuntu computer

I am sorry, but I couldn't comprehend your question well. What file do you want to install?

What are you trying to install? Have you looked in Synaptic (System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager) to see if the package(s) you want are listed there? If they are, mark them for installation and then click on Apply.

Further, which repositories have you enabled? Take a look at Software Sources (System>Administration>Software Sources) to see which ones are checked; look under the Third Party Software Tab to see if you have any of those enabled. One popular third-party repo is medibuntu. Go to www. medibuntu.org for an overview of what is offered there, and for instructions on how to install that repository.

If you are trying to install Windows .exe files, these won't run natively in Linux; some apps work under Wine (Google is your friend), which may be installed as well.

Question Re: im begging you help me!!! (newb)

Add/Remove Programs, located in the Main menu, is likely your best place to start. Or have you downloaded a file from a website that you'd like to install? If so, does it have a .deb extension (these are the best to work with), an .rpm extension (takes a bit more work on Ubuntu), or a .tar.gz extension (bit harder to work with than rpms).

I guess the base question would be, what exactly do you want to install? And another is, what does it do? The first answer lets us know which method is easiest, the second lets us know what it is you'd like to do (as there are many programs in the add/remove repositories that may accomplish the same goal)

Re: im begging you help me!!! (newb)

im trying to install clanbomber (i used to love this game) (my first pc was a duel boot between win-2000 and suse linux)
but i dont completely understand this part:

    Basic Installation
    ==================

    These are generic installation instructions.

The `configure' shell script attempts to guess correct values for
various system-dependent variables used during compilation. It uses
those values to create a `Makefile' in each directory of the package.
It may also create one or more `.h' files containing system-dependent
definitions. Finally, it creates a shell script `config.status' that
you can run in the future to recreate the current configuration, a file
`config.cache' that saves the results of its tests to speed up
reconfiguring, and a file `config.log' containing compiler output
    (useful mainly for debugging `configure').

If you need to do unusual things to compile the package, please try
to figure out how `configure' could check whether to do them, and mail
diffs or instructions to the address given in the `README' so they can
be considered for the next release. If at some point `config.cache'
contains results you don't want to keep, you may remove or edit it.

The file `configure.in' is used to create `configure' by a program
called `autoconf'. You only need `configure.in' if you want to change
it or regenerate `configure' using a newer version of `autoconf'.

The simplest way to compile this package is:

    1. `cd' to the directory containing the package's source code and type
`./configure' to configure the package for your system. If you're
using `csh' on an old version of System V, you might need to type
`sh ./configure' instead to prevent `csh' from trying to execute
    `configure' itself.

Running `configure' takes a while. While running, it prints some
messages telling which features it is checking for.

    2. Type `make' to compile the package.

    3. Type `make install' to install the programs and any data files and
    documentation.

    4. You can remove the program binaries and object files from the
source code directory by typing `make clean'.

Open the terminal then copy and past the command and press enter. then when it asks for a password type in your password and press enter. Then wait for it to install. By the way you won't see your password so type it correctly.
