Hang on apmcd47, you're not entirely misinformed but the "network development environment" is an incomplete definition. Your statement is correct in the same sense that J2EE is a network-development-environment, but directhex's definition is also good.

Getting back to the "evil" question. Yes it is evil, but so am I. It runs great on Linux and OSX.

The term "Mono" is from the Spanish word for monkey.

Even though this thread wasn't supposed to be about java, the subject has been broached, so its worth mentioning that you can run java code in .NET/mono via IKVM. For example, I use the ActiveMQ and Apache Ant java classes in .NET/Mono. The Mono/IKVM stack provides a nice entry point for java developers who want to explore the CLR.

As for the comment about java being more robust and mature, well, java deserves credit for pioneering the VM concept. Java has a substantial user base, so its not going away any time soon.

That said, there's a pretty obvious migration trend. Its not so much that java is shrinking. It just isn't growing. If its any consolation, the trend will repeat itself in 2017. The zealot C# developers will be just as bitter and defensive as the zealot java developers are now.

    Not marginally. By a lot.

There are *WAYHAY* more libraries available for Java as opposed to Mono. No comparison whatsoever.

Java offers the largest amount of functionality runnable on more platforms without any code changes.

I'm pointing out what would be the wisest choice. Some are hysterically and unjustfully biased against Java no matter what one says. You seem like one of them.

Roy has been caught lying dozens of times. He also has friends who use dozens of accounts on forums to make it look like there are dozens of people against Mono when it's really just him and a handful of his friends.

One of his friends even has 42 accounts on a single forum last I heard.

Roy's not bright enough to be a liar.

He's just too dim to comprehend simple stimuli.

That's the difference between ignorance and stupidity.
