ECMA 335 was ratified in 2001. Sun didn't release OpenJDK until 2006.

OpenJDK becoming open was an attempt to compete with the more open offering from Microsoft.

I actually do see a problem if it pushes out Java - because unlike Java, which more or less does run the same on all platforms, Mono doesn't. (ie, some cartoon game recently works on Windows & Macs, not Linux, and the Mono creator was all over Planet Gnome praising them.)

Oh, thanks for the information. I thought it was the other way around...

Java's not cross-platform if you use JNI to invoke Windows-only libraries. Same goes for .NET. The game in question uses native components, and they're not compiling Linux versions of those components. Should they? Probably

In either case, in "pure" terms, OpenJDK and Mono run on the same number of platforms

Flash has a tiny list of compatible platforms. How long has it taken for an x64 version, still without a stable release?

Are you saying that Java released a 64bit plugin before Flash?

Nope, that sucks too. You can have AMD64 Moonlight if you like though, since you seem to have shifted to browser plugins

Maybe it's not a shame, because most virus are Windows apps.

Most viruses aren't .NET apps though
