Ignore my question of how long it should take. Apparently it was having a problem shrinking the volume, but since there is no sort of status indicator, I couldn't tell that it had stopped doing anything.
I used GParted instead. Still haven't been successful in shrinking the Vista volume, but my computer's hard drive was already partitioned into a C drive and a D drive, with the C drive being for Vista and the D drive being for data. I'm going to try to just shrink the D drive and see if I can use that one for Linux (I was able to shrink that one no problem before, but instead of showing up as "unallocated" it just says "free space").
